Labs retrievers are one of the best sporting dogs I know out there. Originally, this breed of dogs was bred to retrieve birds, just like pheasants and hence the name retrievers. With labs for company, people long ago did not have problems finding food to eat. It sounds interesting, or doesn’t it? Here is what you should know, particularly if you are in search of a one-of-a-kind lab dog as a pet.

Nowadays, this breed has got more roles than in the past. For instance, they are mostly used as assistance dogs for people with disabilities, particularly the blind. Additionally, they work as rescue and search dogs, drug detectors with the police among several other roles. Still, labs are awesome companions and sensitive therapy dogs. They are big fans of flyballs and agility. One other fascinating fact about this breed is that they can grow up to 24 inches tall and weigh up to 80 pounds. Males are usually bigger than females. Their tails and those of otters look very much similar.

What color Labrador is your favorite?

As opposed to what most people know, Labradors come in only three colors: yellow (reddish to light cream), black and chocolate (light to dark brown). Even though a lab’s hair is short, he will still shed. Therefore, if you have a Labrador make sure you brush him at least once a week to avoid keeping hair on the floor. Brushing is also vital as it keeps your dog’s skin healthy. Go a step further in bathing the lab so that he stays clean and smells good.

You will know a healthy dog by the look of its coats. Healthy Labradors have two coats. Underneath the beautiful top cost, you can also see a very soft, thick undercoat. This is what keeps your dog warm and dry. Labrador retrievers are known to possess very cool personalities. They love, are friendly, and surprisingly, very patient. They tend to be less aggressive or mean, for a better word and enjoy the company of people very much and if there is anything they adore then its children!

Labradors need exercise often

Just like any other dog, Labradors often need exercise. Therefore, walk your lab every day especially if you have a large yard. Labrador retrievers enjoy swimming tracking, are energetic, enjoy being active and most importantly are very obedient. Anything agility or flyball excites Labrador retrievers. Try playing fetch game with a Labrador—you’ll like it! If you are looking for a pet dog that is easier to train, then be sure to find a lab. These dogs are exceptionally social which means they like both people and animals. A Labrador retriever can be a BIG friend, especially if both of you spend much time together. They are not nervous or shy in any way which means they do not get scared easily. That’s why they make the best watchdogs and bark at anything that seems unusual.

Know Your Breed

Ever seen a dog that loves to put things in his mouth? That is most likely a lab retriever. Speaking to moms, watch out if you have one since it might eat your dining room table. If you want to know whether you have a Labrador Retriever, throw a ball, and a true Labrador will fetch it for you! They love when you watch them run. Make sure your lab learns manners when it is young, if you want to make him the best pet on earth. Funny enough, some Labradors like to familiarize with new people before you can become friends.  As if that’s not enough, they get very lonely when left alone in the yard and might become bark too much to grab your attention. If you have some free time, go out and spend it with your Labrador retriever. It’s the best treat you can give your lab!
